Great place to catch interesting scenes of political protests and such. There is a high police presence because of this. There are several cafes on each side of the plaza. Beware of pickpockets. The police will even warn "extranjeros" about this.

Nice view of the square. There were no tours allowed inside because of a protest occurring but it seemed like an excellent building from the exterior

The Carondelet Palace is the starting place to understand Ecuador in all its dimensions, the history of a diverse country with a high sense of democracy and peace

I did a free guided tour of the Palace and loved it! I got on a tour 45 minutes later so could have lunch & come back for my set time. Bring ID. Very informative and a beautiful building.

Arrived at corner of Garcia Moreno and Espejo to get tickets (9am). Upon arriving I was given a local phone number to call (add 02 in front if you're using a cellphone) and was told that no tickets were available until next week. Bummer! Wish they would have published this info online. I don't know how a non-fluent tourist without a local phone would be able to do this if I couldn't as someone who has lived in Ecuador for 5 years.
